Decorative, solar and security film for schools, offices and healthcare

Last revised October 26, 2026 · Published by Shore Tint & More, a 3M Authorized Window Film Dealer. Editorial disclosure

Three film jobs, three specs

  • Decorative/privacy — frosted, patterned or branded film for conference rooms, exam rooms, sidelights. Specify pattern, coverage height and any graphics.
  • Solar control — heat and glare reduction. Specify performance from data sheets and appearance limits.
  • Safety and security — glass retention and delay. Specify the product, thickness, attachment system and any test standard required by the owner (see our security guides, including the 3M S2400 buyer's guide).

Approvals to plan for

Depending on the building, approvals may involve facilities, risk management, the fire marshal or code official, school safety teams, landlords, or infection-control staff in healthcare. Code compliance — for example, safety glazing requirements or egress — depends on the specific product, test data and the authority having jurisdiction. Film does not automatically make glass 'code compliant.'

Working in occupied space

  • Schedule by zone: after hours, weekends or summer break for schools.
  • Confirm cleaning products and odor tolerances in healthcare settings.
  • Protect floors and furnishings; plan for blinds and window treatments.
  • Agree on site-access, badging and supervision rules up front.
