Residential window film warranty, care and expected life

Last revised October 26, 2026 · Published by Shore Tint & More, a 3M Authorized Window Film Dealer. Editorial disclosure

Reading the warranty

We don't describe any warranty as 'lifetime' in general terms: get the actual document for the exact film you're quoted.

  • Who issues it — the manufacturer, the installer, or both?
  • What it covers — peeling, bubbling, discoloration, adhesive failure; whether labor is included.
  • Glass coverage — some manufacturers offer limited glass coverage when their application guidance is followed.
  • Transferability if you sell the home, and what registration is required.
  • Exclusions — scratches, improper cleaning, and films used outside guidance.

Caring for new film

  • Expect a curing period during which haze or small water pockets may appear; timing depends on weather and film.
  • Don't clean film until the installer says it has cured.
  • Use a soft cloth or squeegee and a mild, non-abrasive cleaner; avoid razor blades, scouring pads and ammonia unless the manufacturer allows it.
  • Keep tape, suction cups and stickers off the film.

Expected life

Interior-applied residential film generally lasts many years, but life varies with the film line, sun exposure, the glass and care. Ask the installer what they've seen on similar windows, and judge the answer against the written warranty.
