Reflected sunlight melting siding or turf: what window film can and can't do
Last revised October 26, 2026 · Published by Shore Tint & More, a 3M Authorized Window Film Dealer. Editorial disclosure
What's happening
Insulated glass units are sealed. As temperature and air pressure change, the panes can flex very slightly inward or outward. A pane that bows inward can act like a weak concave mirror. When a reflective Low-E coating is involved and the angle is right, the reflected sunlight can be concentrated enough to warp or melt vinyl siding, trim or artificial turf.
It tends to show up seasonally, at specific times of day, and on specific surfaces facing the window — which is why it's often noticed as a distorted streak on a neighbor's house.
What it isn't
- Not every Low-E window causes this. Most never do.
- It isn't proof that a window is defective, though the window manufacturer should be told.
- Melted siding can have other causes; confirm the reflection path before blaming a window.
Options people consider
No installer should promise that film will fix reflected-sunlight damage. Ask the window manufacturer first, and get film and glass compatibility approval in writing before any exterior film is applied.
- Exterior screens, awnings or landscaping that interrupt the reflection path.
- Changing the affected material (some siding products are rated for higher heat).
- An exterior-applied film intended to reduce or diffuse reflection — but results depend on the window, and film manufacturers and window manufacturers may restrict exterior application on certain units.
What a site inspection checks
- Which window is reflecting, at what time and season.
- Glass type, coating location and the window manufacturer's guidance.
- Whether a non-film fix (screen, shade, landscaping) is simpler.
FAQ
My neighbor's windows are melting my siding. What should I do first?
Document the damage with dates and times, talk to your neighbor, and contact the window manufacturer. Film is only one possible option.
Will film void the window warranty?
It can. Check the window manufacturer's terms before applying anything to the glass.
